Great to visit in all Seasons
Aboriginals attributed 5 seasons to the Valley, with a an extra tucked in between spring & summer. Winters and early spring are characterised by morning fogs, summers which really start in January can be hot but dry. Autumn is showtime !
Strong Community
Community values involve self-reliance and mutual support. Volunteerism is a given: The CFA, SES and Ambulance rely on the dedication and efforts of a small band of locals. The 2021 Census reported that 35% of Valley residents do voluntary work thru an organisation. Sport has always been a social-binder with football and netball at the top but golf is also very popular.
Challenges Ahead
Change is on the way with the rapid increase in tourism and visitors placing a strain on the existing infrastructure. The hamlet has no reticulated water or sewerage and getting the balance right so that residents can still enjoy the peace and beauty is critical. Planning for the social and economic development of the town is inhibited by the inability to construct new dwellings because of the bushfire overlay regulations.

The Bushfire Management Overlay (BMO) applies to land in Victoria that may be at risk from bushfire.
Mitta township is within a BMO and it is likely that any application for a Planning Permit for a new dwelling or building will be denied. Consultation with Towong Shire is essential to avoid any disappointments.Baden's Beach May Once Again Open
Baden's Beach, once a very popular swimming hole on the Mitta Mitta River, is likely to be re-opened if Towong Shire plans go ahead.
Popular for school swimming carnivals and a great spot to picnic, the beach was adjacent to land owned by Baden Prichard. Actually, Prichard's full name was Mafeking Baden Powell Prichard (1900-1984), born at Mitta and a descendent of Port Arthur convicts. Prichard was a very active and respected community member and farmer who pushed Council to provide public access to the beach in 1953.
Many visitors and past residents will have fond memories of Baden's.
